Colour Blockish Mittens

Isn’t crochet so much fun? If I had to guess I’d say I haven’t crocheted anything in over a month. I enjoy crocheting, love browsing patterns, selecting yarn, and creating something with my own two hands. Unfortunately I become easily discouraged and add a lot of pressure to what is supposed to be a fun and relaxing activity, especially around Christmas. And so I went into a self imposed crochet exile of sorts until finally deciding to pick up the hook and yarn and have a go at it again. Check out the mittens I made below. Cute, right?

I used the Perfect Fit Mittens pattern which is available for free from Left in Knots. There were a few modifications I made to achieve my perfect fit such as omitting rows 15, and 16, and adjusting the thumb (row 1: 12 hdc, 1 hdc2tog (13); row 5: 11 hdc, 1 hdc2tog (12); row 6: 6 hdc2tog (6); omit row 7). The yarn I used is Red Heart Soft in the seafoam and grape colourways as chosen by husband because I could not handle the pressure. As it is a simple pattern it was easy enough to customize and I’m quite happy with the result.

My timing for these mittens isn’t the best since we are having a bit of a warm spell at the moment (not that I’m complaining), but at least the next time there is a chill in the air I will be ready with a soft burst of colour.

Signed Scarlet

As I began reading Scarlet (book two of the Lunar Chronicles) the other day I was delighted to notice I received an autographed copy, how awesome is that?! I’m enjoying the book so far, Marissa Meyer’s take on classic fairy tales is intriguing and makes me glad I decided to read the Lunar Chronicles series.

First Book Outlet Haul

Last week I placed my first order with Book Outlet and it arrived this week, very exciting! The books I ordered are…

bo1aScarlet (The Lunar Chronicles) — Marissa Meyer

Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, is trying to break out of prison—even though if she succeeds, she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive.

Cress (The Lunar Chronicles) — Marissa Meyer

Cinder and Captain Thorne are fugitives on the run, now with Scarlet and Wolf in tow. Together, they’re plotting to overthrow Queen Levana and prevent her army from invading Earth.

Fairest (The Lunar Chronicles) — Marissa Meyer

Pure evil has a name, hides behind a mask of deceit, and uses her “glamour” to gain power. But who is Queen Levana?

Cruel Crown — Victoria Aveyard

Two women on either side of the Silver-Red divide tell the stories no one else knows.

Four Summoner’s Tales — Kelley Armstrong, Christopher Golden, David Liss, Jonathan Maberry

What if the dead could be summoned from their graves—for a price? What if a quartet of distinctive storytellers took a stab at this deceptively simple idea—on a dare? The answers lie here, in Four Summoner’s Tales, as these acclaimed writers accept the challenge and rise to the occasion—in four brilliantly chilling ways. It’s all in the execution. . .

Enthralled: Paranormal Diversions — Melissa Marr, Kelley Armstrong

“Enthralled” is a collection of 14 original teen paranormal short stories from some of today’s bestselling YA talent, united with the common theme of road trips.bo1collage

Shards & Ashes (Otherworld Stories) — Melissa Marr, Kelley Armstrong

Gripping and powerful original stories of dystopian worlds from New York Times bestselling authors

Living with the Dead — Kelley Armstrong

The men and women of the Otherworld – witches, werewolves, demons, vampires – live unseen among us. Only now a reckless killer has torn down the wall, trapping one very human woman in the supernatural crossfire.

Fairest: The Return of the Maharaja — Sean Williams, Stephen Sadowski

When young Nalayani seeks the help of the Maharaja to save her humble village, she uncovers a secret that could change the Fables Universe forever: the still alive but thought long dead Prince Charming!

Living with the Dead was purchased to replace a rather beat up copy of mine, but otherwise I’m looking forward to reading all of these books in time. Not to say I’m not looking forward to re-reading Living with the Dead, I love Kelley Armstrong and plan to re-read her Women of the Otherworld series many times.

As a Canadian I’m really happy that I heard about Book Outlet because finally here is a site with awesome deals on books that sell using Canadian currency (so actually an awesome deal, no loss with converting the dollar) with reasonable shipping. It’s quite possible I am addicted to books and yarn, I consider myself quite happy to have hooked up with a new supplier.

This “Hello World” post is like a self titled album with the faux confidence of an ageing hipster and the lacklustre appeal of a greatest hits collection performed by a tone deaf cover band and recorded on cassette.

End of post.

But for realzies, thanks for visiting! In truth I’m not expecting many readers, I haven’t followed any of the blog world advice as far as figure out who your target audience is, the message you want to convey, what your blog is about, yada yada yada. Quirbubbly is something I’ve decided to be completely selfish with and create for me about whatever happens to interest me at the time – if it happens to interest you too, bonus! I have enjoyed reading various blogs for a few years now and I am enticed by the reflection that they offer, an opportunity for you to share something you care about in the moment and look back on it days, weeks, months, years from then and hopefully smile, maybe laugh, perhaps be proud or reminded of a joy in life since forgotten. Sure there is always the chance you might cringe (hello future me reading this post two weeks from now *waves*) but nonetheless you went out there and tried something.

What might this blog include? Here are some of the things I am interested in these days:

  • Crochet – Self taught and continuously learning, I have a lot of yarn (over 1,000 balls/skeins/hanks) and yet never enough for the project at hand.
  • Reading – Predominately (read exclusively) fiction, Kelley Armstrong is my favourite author and she might just have her own bookshelf in my living room.
  • Netflix – Amazing Spider-man, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Shadowhunters, No Tomorrow, Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23, Sherlock.
  • Eating – In the past this might have been baking, but I am a lazy glutton who enjoys eating more than the cooking and preparing of food at the moment, hopefully that changes with time (and my waistline too).
  • Soccer – Not sports, just sport – Soccer. Toronto FC was robbed of the MLS Cup, they played the better game and everyone knows it!
